If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I love to save money wherever I can. I am a coupon cutter, a BOGO fanatic, and deal hunter, so it’s safe to say when I hear the words “free money” I will always check it out. There are so many shopping apps out there that claim to reward you for activities that you do on a daily basis and pay you to shop at your favorite retailers. Sounds too good to be true right? Well, yes and no. I have tried what feels like every shopping app under the sun, and one of my top contenders is Shopkick.
I am all about saving you time, so I want to break down the app so you can decide whether it fits your money-saving lifestyle. With the popularity of these type of apps constantly on the rise, it’s important to find the ones you enjoy and not waste your times on the ones that simply aren’t worth it. I have been using Shopkick for quite some time now, so I have brought you the good, the bad, and the ugly for this app.
The Shopkick app has a solid 4.2 rating on Google Play and a 4.7 rating on iTunes, and it’s been downloaded over 200,000 times, which makes their almost 5-star rating even more impressive.
They have also paid out over $90 million in gift cards, movie tickets, and many other rewards. That number alone is enough to grab your attention.
What Is Shopkick?
Shopkick is a mobile shopping app where you can earn rewards for doing things like walking into your favorite store, scanning product barcodes, and buying featured products. Hold up… did I just say you can earn rewards for WALKING INTO A STORE? Why yes, yes I did. You can get paid for simply walking into a store without purchasing anything.
Being the shopping app skeptic that I am, I thought this was too good to be true so I put it to the test so you don’t have to. Low and behold, as soon as I stepped foot into Target, I got a notification that 50 kicks were just added to my account for simply walking in the front door… what?! I know.
Here’s the catch: in order for this to work, you’ll need to have Bluetooth turned on and location services enabled on whichever device you have set up your Shopkick account with. You’ll also need to make sure you have the app running on your phone prior to arriving. I tried turning it on when I was already inside and it didn’t work. You bet I walked my money-saving booty back outside, turned it on, and walked right back in. No shame in the cash-back game.
Essentially, Shopkick will pay you for activities that you normally do on a daily basis (like walk into Target).
How Does It Work?
If you have a smartphone or tablet, you’re good to go! They do have a website, but in order to participate and earn gift cards, movie tickets, and other awesome prizes you’ll need to download their mobile app. The good news is their app is simple and easy to use and you can rack up points fairly quickly!
Simply check the app before you go shopping and tag your favorite stores, click on the receipt icon to see what products are eligible to earn kicks, purchase these products and upload your receipt to the app. Your kicks should appear in your account shortly after you submit your receipt.
Here are just a few ways for you to earn kicks from using Shopkick:
- Walking into selected stores like Best Buy, Walmart, Target, & Krogers just to name a few
- Scanning product barcodes in store
- Link your credit card to the app to earn bonus kicks
- Purchasing featured products
- Scanning QR codes using your smartphone or tablet
- Uploading your receipt
There are currently over 50 stores that you can choose from and each week they have special promotions where you can earn even more kicks.
How Do I Get my Free Prizes?
Their compensation plan comes in the form of “kicks”, which you can earn by doing various things like I mentioned above as well as referring your friends and family and having them download the app.
You can redeem your kicks for gift cards to places like Sephora, Starbucks, Target, Walmart, Uber, and even Tiffany and Co.! The possibilities are endless.
How to Get Your Points Faster
Like any app of this nature, they have a referral program you can join to earn bonus kicks for referring other people to their app. If you know other people who like money, this one will be easy. For each person who signs up for an account and downloads their app, and either walks into a store or scans their first product barcode, you’ll be awarded 500 kicks.
Here’s a little cheat for you: next time you are with a friend, have them download the app and drive them to Target or any other location that will earn you kicks and BAM easy 500 kicks. Make a day out of it! Next time you and your friends are bored, go on a kick scavenger hunt! Is that crazy? Maybe… but someone earned a 4-day vacation to Disney Land so if they can do it so can you!
You can earn 500 kicks per person, but ONLY for the first 100 people who successfully complete the tasks I’ve listed above. There is the potential for you to earn up to 50,000 kicks if done correctly. That’s a lot of gift cards… ca-ching!
Who Would Benefit From This App The Most?
Shopkick is for anyone and everyone who goes shopping and likes free money... so I think a better question would be who wouldn’t benefit from this app? Unless of course, you don't like money. PLUS this app is free... so what do you have to lose?
Here’s What I Liked About It
- You get rewarded for visiting stores, even if you don't buy anything.
- You don't have to go out of your way to earn kicks, you can earn points by doing activities that you already do on a day-to-day basis.
- It's VERY use friendly.
- A plethora of different (and easy) ways to earn kicks.
Here’s What I Didn’t Like About It
- You can't earn actual cash, like many other shopping incentive apps.
- Many people have reported problems with the app, and while I haven't noticed any problems, it is worth mentioning.
Is Shopkicks Really Worth Your Time?
Totally! Especially if you shop for a family or are a frequent shopper at any of their locations! After the initial set-up, this app takes about 30 seconds of your time each time you shop, which makes it make this worth your time if you ask me!
Personally, I love these types of apps and I think of them as earning free gift cards for something I'm going to do anyway, like shop at Target. Why not earn a little something-something on the side?
I think this is a no-brainer and I think we can all agree that it would be cool to get awarded for doing things like visiting stores and buying products that we normally buy anyway.
